Can Albany be the ‘Venice of the Northeast’?
We used to live in Venice, California—famous for Muscle Beach (where Arnold Schwarzenegger trained long before he became a star) and the Venice Canals. Fashioned after the canals in Venice, Italy, these charming waterways (now lined with expensive homes) were the singular vision of Abbot Kinney, a developer in the late 1800s who wanted to create the “Venice of America.”
A similar vision is taking shape for Albany. The Albany Waterway Canal is a transformative project that would bring a large canal through the downtown area. Under this plan, Lock One of the Erie Canal would be dug up and brought from the Warehouse District all the way down Broadway. A boat marina would be established in front of the historic Delaware and Hudson Building (now known as the SUNY Plaza). You can see plans and renditions of the project here.
Unlike other ideas for reimagining the Albany waterfront, this plan operates on the concept that “if you can’t bring the city to the river, bring the river to the city.” It’s a big, bold vision that would inevitably involve a huge budget and years of massive reconstruction.
But Albany Waterway Inc., the group spearheading the project, is undeterred. In fact, it raised $100,000 in the span of two weeks earlier this year, and is applying for a NYS Planning Grant to continue the project, according to co-founder BJ Costello.
The group says it already has the one crucial component it needs to be successful—access to the Hudson River. It will need that and the unwavering determination of what Steve Jobs once called “the crazy ones”—the visionaries who won’t take no for an answer.

“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers… the ones who see things differently. You can disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things.” —Steve Jobs, Apple commercial, 1997
Warm days and cooler nights are in store for the weekend with little chance of rain.

These cannabis gummies keep selling out in 2024
If you've ever struggled to enjoy cannabis due to the harshness of smoking or vaping, you're not alone. That’s why these new cannabis gummies caught our eye.
Mood is an online dispensary that has invented a “joint within a gummy” that’s extremely potent yet federally-legal. Their gummies are formulated to tap into the human body’s endocannabinoid system.
Although this system was discovered in the 1990’s, farmers and scientists at Mood were among the first to figure out how to tap into it with cannabis gummies. Just 1 of their rapid onset THC gummies can get you feeling right within 5 minutes!
Naked in a Cave: Would you go in the nude here?
🗞️ CAPITAL DISTRICT DIGEST
🍆 🍑 September 28th is your last chance to be Naked in a Cave! Apparently, Howe Caverns has grown tired of shrinkage jokes as this will be the final year for the popular self-guided, birthday-suited cave tour. Reserve your robe before it’s gone for good. [Times Union]
🕯️A candlelight vigil will be held Friday at 7:30 pm to honor the life and legacy of Albany civil rights champion Alice Green, who died Tuesday at age 84. The vigil begins at the Center for Law and Justice in Albany, which she founded. [News 10]
💸 Surprisingly, the city of Saratoga Springs says it may only see a small profit, if any at all, from the Belmont on Broadway festival held in June, even though the event attracted more than 25,000 people. It looks like sales tax revenue fell short compared to the overtime costs for city workers. [Daily Gazette]
