In Their Own Voice, Youths Report on Mitigating the Climate Risks on the Hudson River Estuary

This climate change reporting series is produced in collaboration with Partners for Climate Action Hudson Valley, with the support of the Youth Climate Action Fund, a sponsored project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies in partnership with United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and the Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation (BCPI) at Johns Hopkins University.

The Hudson River, a vital natural and economic artery for New York State, faces growing threats from climate change, including rising sea levels, more frequent flooding, and warming temperatures. These changes will disrupt ecosystems, endanger riverside communities, and threaten biodiversity along the Hudson River Estuary.

In response, local organizations, government programs, and community initiatives are working together to mitigate these risks through habitat restoration, green infrastructure, and advocacy for clean energy solutions. Protecting the Hudson requires coordinated, long-term action to preserve this essential waterway for future generations and ensure it continues to support both people and nature.

With support from the Youth Climate Action Fund, The 518 is inviting youth writers to report on these efforts to save the Hudson from the enormous threats posed by climate change—from their own perspective.

These stories will be published beginning in late 2024 and continue through 2025.
