Your reactions to the closing of Dan's Place II 🥲

After 48 years, Dan’s Place II—a treasured Albany institution—has served its last breakfasts.

Here are some reader reactions, along with suggestions for where to satisfy your greasy spoon cravings with the closure of Albany’s best diner (in our opinion):

“Is it even Albany without Dan’s Place?”

“Best place for very early breakfast after Friday night disco!”

“We love Dan’s! Brittany and the crew are the nicest people around, and made some awesome food—including best pancakes we’ve ever had! RIP to Tom and to the best diner around the Capital Region.”

“I've been a regular at Dan's for several decades, going back to the Madison Avenue location. During my single years, every girlfriend I ever had got the Dan's breakfast experience very early in the relationship. My wife and I ate there together last week, just because. I've brought countless people to Dan's over the years (not only girlfriends) and every one of them loved it, some becoming regulars themselves. Every meal I've eaten there has been excellent—hotcakes, omelets, burgers, ALL of it, all the time. Most definitely the best home fries in the universe. But, more than the food, it was the people—the family—who made Dan's the place to go. Forever to be held in my heart (and stomach!), with love and gratitude.”

Skyline Diner! I ordered steak and eggs and the steak was actually cooked a proper medium.”

“Favorite diner has to be Blue Ribbon! Stellar food and service. And of course the baked goods, from toast to buns to desserts, come from their bakery and are amazing!”

“Favorite diner was Dan's Place, but now it's any diner that's in an Airstream. Nothing beats eating bacon and eggs at the tight bar in an old Airstream.”

Capital City Diner. Lots of good food for a great price.”

Inga’s Diner is the best for vibes, food is pretty good too. If it's just food? Blue Ribbon or On The Hill Cafe.”

“That section of Washington Avenue isn't gentrified enough yet for me, thanks. But the quick zip down 9W to Sunday Brunch at Red's Restaurant, which has been serving great food with safe and spacious parking for 75+ years.”
