Tacos Diablo aināt no Taco Bell. Authentic Mexican street tacos is its hero item. š·ļø via Facebook
Capital Region restaurant chains that are taking off
Krispy Kreme. Joeās Crab Shack. Fuddruckers.
These are all national chains that once had a footprint in the Capital District but have since departed š But no biggie because we have several homegrownāand betterāchains that are seeing growing success. And donāt be surprised if one or two of these go national themselves at some point.
First up is Tacos Diablo. The Mexican eatery started as a takeout trailer run out of the Blue Plate restaurant in Chatham, but has since opened restaurants in Nassau and Guilderland. Itās also added menu items like ābowlritos,ā salads and quesadillas.
But its signature item is still the humble Mexican street taco, which stays true to its roots here: a bit of braised meat on small corn tortillas, topped with pickled onions, cilantro, guac and salsa. No ground beef. No melted cheese.
Keeping it real is a big focus for founder and chef Dominic Giuliano, who grew up in Southern California and often ate at Mexican food stands across the border.
āThis taco is really important to me,ā Giuliano told the Altamont Enterprise. āWeāre educating people as to what is Mexican street food.ā
As he looks to grow the brand, Giuliano is considering potential locations in Clifton Park and Delmar.

Reader poll: Yāall sticking with New York Stateāfor now
Our story on āPeople leaving New York State in drovesā got a big response, leading to our most-voted poll yet. Sixty of you put in a voteā24 said you wouldnāt leave the state, while another 23 said you were sticking around but ākeeping your options open.ā Just 11 readers said they were planning to leave or have left, and 2 voted for āIād hate to leave, but itās getting too damn expensive.ā
Taliesin Thomas, a writer in Troy, said it simply: āI HEART NY FOREVER!ā
Jugo said: āThe lower class and middle class are getting squeezed like no tomorrow. Then our politicians act like it's some big secret that needs to be investigated. A committee was needed??? Really?!ā
Another reader wrote in to say: āNot necessarily looking to move out of Albany with all my friends and family close by but the thought has certainly crossed my mind, especially if a great job opportunity arises elsewhere. In the meantime, Albany checks most of my boxes for a place to start a family.ā
Albany checks all of our boxes too, and itās getting better every dayāespecially if we donāt just complain but do something to make it more livable šŖ

āNow that my secret is known, I'll forever Rest in Peace,ā Col. Edward Thomas Ryan wrote in his obit.
Honoring the Colonel who revealed secret in obit
When Col. Edward Thomas Ryan passed away last month at 85, his obituary contained a huge secret held for decadesāhe was gay. On Sunday, at Rocks Bar on Central Avenue in Albany, family, friends and admirers came to pay their respects.
The colonelās obituary went viral when he used it as the occasion to reveal his lifelong secret; the story was even picked up by The New York Times.
"I must tell you one more thing. I was Gay all my life: thru grade school, thru High School, thru College, thru Life," he wrote in the obit, which can be read in full on Legacy.com.
Ryan served in Vietnam during a time when being gay could have led to a dishonorable discharge and loss of benefits. "I just wish he could enjoy what I see today," said Linda Sargent, Ryanās niece. "It breaks my heart that my uncle never had the chance to be open about who he was; he had to hide." Read the full story on Sundayās memorial at News10.
